The 'Peaceable' Rule
We stand immovable on the truth of scripture, but we do so without vitriol, personal attacks, or aggressive debate tactics. We seek peace.
1. Immovable Conviction, Gentle Demeanor
A central trap of public advocacy is matching the hostility of one's opponents. The Christian Council rejects this path. We believe that the truth of God does not require human anger or defensive posturing to sustain it.
We stand firm on biblical standards of morality, orthopraxy, and doctrine. However, we deliver these convictions with a gentle and respectful voice. Hostility is often a sign of insecurity; peace is a sign of deep-rooted truth.
2. De-escalating Public Controversies
In our responses to public misrepresentations, we seek to de-escalate rather than inflame. We do not participate in mudslinging, character assassination, or reactive social media feuds.
If we are attacked or slandered, our response is characterized by factual refutation and moral dignity. We trust in the sovereignty of God and the objective clarity of truth, rendering retaliatory anger obsolete.
3. Guidelines for Peaceable Defense
Do not respond to criticism in the heat of anger. Take time to formulate responses that are measured and biblically sound.
Avoid personal insults or passive-aggressive remarks. Keep the focus entirely on the ideas, policies, or statements being discussed.
Recognize that winning a debate at the cost of the listener's respect is a defeat for the Gospel.
